Third ALMS podium for Aston Martin at Laguna Seca

The Aston Martin Racing team came away from the final round of the American Le Mans Series at Laguna Seca, California, with a podium finish following another thrilling race.
Pedro Lamy and Peter Kox took third position in the GT1 category in their no. 58 Aston Martin DBR9, despite suffering a puncture and receiving a penalty following contact with another car. One place behind was the no. 57 DBR9 of Darren Turner and David Brabham, who had struggled with the handling having collided with a fellow GT1 competitor mid-race.

“It was nice at the beginning,” said Lamy. “At one stage we were leading and we were fast. Then I had a touch with another car, got a stop-and-go, and I had a puncture yet we were still able to finish third.”

Brabham was on course to take third position before he pitted in the final hour for new tyres. “Turning right became a lot more difficult and the problem got worse as the stint went on and the tyres wore out,” said the Australian. “It became impossible to get round a right-hander. It was fine turning left, but as soon as I backed off the throttle, without even touching the brake the car tried to rotate. We were looking good for third, but it became so bad that I had to pit for tyres.

“We have learned a hell of a lot this season, and particularly this race. It was always a development year, and we were going to have good runs and bad runs. Today was a good day in terms of lessons learned.”

David Richards, Chairman of Prodrive, commented: “We knew from the outset that the Corvette had a distinct advantage and it has had a pace advantage all year over us. The objective was to ensure both cars got to the finish reliably and they did in the best positions they could expect in the circumstances. It is very clear that the disparity in performance needs to be addressed now by the organisers before we can consider a season back here.”

Team Principal George Howard-Chappell summed up: “Clearly we are disappointed with our performance. The team did a great job once again, and third and fourth is a credible result but not what we came here for. The handicap and performance breaks given to teams need to be re-adjusted, this is clear and is acknowledged by everyone.”
